چکیده

This study investigated the relationship between emotional rumination and cortisol secretion during stress. Subjects were 51 student nurses undergoing a written examination as part of their training and urinary-free cortisol was assayed from samples taken immediately after the examination and again three weeks later. Cortisol difference scores were obtained. expressed as a function of creatinine, assayed simultaneously, and baseline cortisol levels. Subjects completed the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) and the Emotion Control Questionnaire (ECQ) and results showed that cortisol differences were associated with the rehearsal (or rumination) scale from the ECQ and to a lesser extent ECQ emotional inhibition and EPI neuroticism. @ 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The relationship between work-related rumination and evening and morning salivary cortisol secretion.

The perseverative cognition hypothesis suggests that worry/ruminative thinking prolongs stress-related physiological activation. This study explored the association of work-related rumination with salivary cortisol sampled at 10 pm and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) the following morning. On a mid-week evening, 108 school teachers completed a small diary about their work-related thoughts...

Physical activity moderates effects of stressor-induced rumination on cortisol reactivity.

OBJECTIVE Physically active individuals have lower rates of morbidity and mortality, and recent evidence indicates that physical activity may be particularly beneficial to those experiencing chronic stress. The tendency to ruminate increases and prolongs physiological stress responses, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses as indexed by cortisol reactivity to stressful e...

Depressive rumination alters cortisol decline in Major Depressive Disorder.

Depressive rumination - a central characteristic of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) - is a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy that prolongs sad mood and depressive episodes. Considerable research demonstrates the emotional and behavioral consequences of depressive rumination, yet few studies investigate its effect on neuroendocrine functioning. The current study examined the effect of an e...

Extending the recovery window: Effects of trait rumination on subsequent evening cortisol following a laboratory performance stressor.

Mental rehearsal of past stressors through rumination may extend the physiological stress response and exposure to stress-related physiological mediators, such as cortisol. If repeated over time, this prolonged activation may contribute to a number of chronic health conditions. Findings from the emerging literature on the tendency to ruminate and its association with cortisol have been somewhat...

Emotional Regulation and Depression: A Potential Mediator between Heart and Mind

A narrative review of the major evidence concerning the relationship between emotional regulation and depression was conducted. The literature demonstrates a mediating role of emotional regulation in the development of depression and physical illness. Literature suggests in fact that the employment of adaptive emotional regulation strategies (e.g., reappraisal) causes a reduction of stress-elic...
